Ningbo University was founded in 1986 with the first donate from Sir Yue-kong Pao, the world-renowned shipping magnate and Deng Xiaoping autographed the name. It was built with high-caliber support from Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, the University of Science and Technology of China, and the former Hangzhou University. Today, Ningbo University is on the list of China’s “Double First-Class” initiatives which aims to build first-class universities and first-class disciplines and jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, Zhejiang Province, and the city of Ningbo, one of the first key universities designated by Zhejiang Province, and is ranked 78th nationally in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
The university currently enrolls more than 35,000 full-time students, including about 1000 international students from over 100 countries. It employs more than 3,500 faculty and staff members, among whom more than 2,400 are engaged in teaching and research. The faculty includes 12 full-time academicians, among whom 6 are foreign academicians. Each year the university engages more than 100 long-term foreign faculty. Among them, one expert has received the Chinese Government Friendship Award, six has been ranked in the global top-2 % scientists list, and one has been honored with the Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.
Comprehensive range of disciplines: The university comprises 26 schools and six directly affiliated hospitals, it’s overall strength consistently ranks among the top 100 universities nationwide. It offers 12 disciplines, including Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management, Arts, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The university has 59 undergraduate programs, 63 master's programs, 14 doctoral programs and 9 postdoctoral research stations. Mechanics has been selected as a national “Double First-Class” discipline, while Fisheries is designated as a provincial peak discipline，14 disciplines have entered the top 1% of ESI globally.
Leading scientific research and innovation: The university hosts one State Key Laboratory and has received one National Natural Science Award, two National Technology Invention Awards, and six National Science and Technology Progress Awards. It proactively serves national strategic needs and local socioeconomic development, the anti-collision technology of cross sea bridges has reached the international leading level, and the technology of aquaculture of seafood in saline alkali land has been promoted in inland areas.
Outstanding talent cultivation: The university has 38 national first-class undergraduate programs and 35 national first-class courses. Its undergraduate progression rate to graduate study is 37.38%. It has received the “Advanced University Collective” award at the China International College Student Innovation Competition for 9 consecutive years, and it has won the Challenge Cup Excellence Award for 13 consecutive years.
Distinctive internationalization features: The university has established partnerships with more than 100 overseas universities and institutions, hosts one Sino-foreign cooperative educational institute and four joint programs, and operates two Confucius Institutes, making it one of the first universities in Zhejiang Province recognized for its international character. The university has more than 1000 degree-seeking students from over 100 countries. Over the past two years, the university has approved more than 10 YES (Young Envoys Scholarship) programs, hosted student groups from over 10 countries, and engaged nearly 400 students. The programs have different themes and features. (e.g. The theme of the program hosted by Faculty of Sports Science is keen on the connection between technology and sports. The theme of the program hosted by Ningbo University-University of Angers Joint Institute is in-depth study of Chinese geographical culture and cross-cultural exchange.)
